THE SLIPCASE

designed by Marc Newson

Marc Newson has been described as one of the most influential designers of his generation. He has worked across an extremely wide range of disciplines, and his clients include some of the best-known and most prestigious brands in the world spanning diverse sectors from furniture, luxury goods, and technology, to marine, automotive, and aviation design. Marc Newson, himself a Type 59 owner, has exclusively designed the sleeve and stand for the Type 59 books.

The design of this beautiful artwork echoes some typical elements of the Type 59 and thus celebrates this iconic automobile. In order to reduce the weight of the Type 59 due to the new 750 kg formula which was introduced in 1934 – the first full racing season of the Type 59 – a lightened frame was developed which in cooperated drilled holes in the frame.

The pierced circles in the slipcase are inspired by this development and became part of the design. The riveted edges of the slipcase take their inspiration from the riveted spine, which runs over the centre of the bonnet via the scuttle to the tail and became an iconic Bugatti design trademark, which was seen later also to be seen on the 1936 Type 57S Atlantic.

A factory drawing from 25 April 1934 of the Type 59 chassis side rails, lightened for the 1934 season and the 750 kg rules.

The bespoke hand made book slipcase itself is manufactured from solid blocks of aluminium for the side panels and rolled for the outer frame. Each unit contains 92 rivets with an anodized silver finish. Exclusively built by Gentry restorations in England, one of the leading Bugatti restorers in the world.

The Type 59 book slipcases are milled from solid blocks of aluminium, designed by Marc Newson and produced under his personal supervision. The sleeves are limited to 59 and engraved with his signature and individual number.
